left brain, right brain. is everything just about results?
everyone has a talent, a potential, that’s not necessarily related to school. composing, acting, drawing – are they not talents?
when i mention a neighborhood school, the first response of some people is
“aiyah, those people stupid one lah. no future.”
what kind of comment is that?
some people say singers or artists usually did badly in school. that’s because they’re more artistically-inclined are more right-brained than left.
does that make them stupid?
the main difference between the left and right brain is that they’re different halves of the brain. it dosen’t make one half more inferior to the other.
what is the definition of stupid? stupid people are people who are not smart, people who don’t exercise the potential of their brain.
in this shit society, people who are left-brained are said to be very “smart”, but does that make the right-brained people, the more artistically-inclined people, stupid?
this shit society is surrounded by “left-brainers”, practical, one-sided people. why do you think we actually have to pay other countries money to help name and design our roads and buildings?
left-brainers, people who have a lousy imagination, who think everything needs a scientific explantion, who feel that everything can only be done a certain way, who don’t feel or emote as well as “right-brainers”.
if a person sucks at science and maths, and only does well in subjects like music and visual arts, he is considered “stupid”.
in school, it’s all about the left brain. maths, science. even right-brainers become left-brainers in order to keep up. do poor results equate to no potential, no talent? if you don’t do well in school, are you a loser in life?
do good results equate to being smart? does being in a bad school but having an artistic ability means you’re stupid? the right brain is just considered inferior to the left.
people in science streams are considered “smarter” than those in arts streams. people who take triple science are “smarter” than those who take combined.
you have a super hard time getting into a tertiary institution if you fail maths, but who cares if you failed music?
and some of you guys reading this are probably thinking “because music is an unimportant subject, duh.” there’s a subject called o level music. if you take it, will people consider you “stupid”, taking it just because you can’t do other subjects?
some people say artistic people don’t earn much usually, and it’s hard to get a stable job involving the arts unless you’re really good at it.
exactly – singapore just dosen’t encourage people with artistic talent.
the main reason there are more left-brained, practical people in singapore is that we grew up in a left-brained, practical society.
think about this: if singapore encouraged creativity and artistic talent more than intellectuality and practicality, left-brained people would be considered stupid.
just like how right-brained people aren’t as good at maths or science, left-brainers aren’t as good at composing, story writing, designing. they’re equal.
artistically-inclined people and intellectual people, the only difference is that they use different parts of their brain. does it make the minority, the artistic people, stupid?
it’s just like the baby problem in china i guess. everyone wants a boy. they give birth to so many boys that now there’s a gender imbalance, but in their eyes boys will always be better than girls. what’s wrong with girls? nothing, but to them, a girl is useless. i guess it’s exactly the same thing happening. if it was a equal or female-dominated society, this would not happen.
it’s just like this left-right-brain society in singapore. they haven’t realised that creative, artistic talent is equally as important and credible as intellectuality and practicality. they work hand in hand, just like girls and guys.
shit society.
